OH BOY DID SOMEONE SAY HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP BL MANGA??? Rutta and Kodama is my personal fav and I highly recommend checking out the rest of Fujitani Youko’s works, they’re all really fluffy and cute :> (especially Aishiteru and Shampoo). As for more mangas that lack the romanticzed abuse running rampant in the BL genre, here’s some of my fav stories from my fav artists.
Bukiyou na Silent by Takanaga Hinako. Yes this is the same artist who wrote Koisuru Boukun which features major dub-con and non-con, but this story is refreshingly sweet. There’s one chapter of jealousy directed at a female character but that’s quickly resolved and she actually appears in later chapters as friends with the two main guys. Unfortunately DP Scanlations dropped this project after 15 chapters and I don’t know if it was picked up by another group. Still entertaining though, and the art and proportions are gorgeous!
Konbini-kun by Junko. My absolute fav. This is a one volume deal with only five chapters but still totally adorable and worth the read. This story does deal with homophobia as a major theme though so tread carefully if that isn’t your style. Junko’s art is super fantastic and I highly recommend her other works Starlike Words and Recipe Prince.
Sorenari ni Shinken Nandesu by Asou Kai. This manga for me is like, the single father story to end all single father stories. Most of the plot is the two main characters learning more about each other while dealing with a persistent cold virus. It’s a slow build up to any real action and also deals with one of the characters struggles as a single father and his ill-fated previous marriage. The characters personalities are refreshing and the main theme of family dynamics and interdependence makes for some super cute moments. I also recommend Sono Mama De for a more adult story about developing feelings :>
Kokoro (series) by Kanda Neko. not gonna lie, it’s a little confusing trying to keep track of all the chapters in this series. It started out as one volume, Otokogokoro, which then spawned like four sequels of varying length, some of which have repeated chapters which is probably a scanlator error, but idk. All the trouble is worth it though because this series is Majorly Adorable. There’s an age difference between the two main characters which is handled appropriately but most of the plot is sweet, slice of life drabbles. I also recommend Harapeko Usagi to Koisuru Ookami which is short (3 chapters) but just as cute).
Honto Yajuu by Yamamoto Kotetsuko. I don’t think there’s any BL fan alive who hasn’t read Honto Yajuu but if you’re one of those people, I highly adivse you to start it right now. It’s an absolutely hilarious cop/yakuza story packed full of action and crass humor on Aki’s part. There is one mini-arc where one of the charatcers has an omiai (arranged marriage) meeting which doesn’t give the story points in the “no jealousy towards women” category, but everything else is totally worth the read.
Hana no Mizo Shiru and its sequels Hana no Migoro Ni and Hana no Miyako De by Takarai Rihito. This was a rec from a friend that quickly became one of my favorite mangas. I included this series because even though it has a manipulative relationship in it (not between the main couple), I think it’s an important read. It has elements of discovering attraction/sexuality and is more of a slow burn story, but it’s rewarding in the end. The main characters are considerate and the art is absolutely gorgeous. You might know Takarai Rihito as the person who drew the manga adaptation of the shounen-ai novel Seven Days by Tachibana Benio which was recently green-lit for a two part movie.
Those are all my absolute favs. More notable mangas (without pictures for the sake of brevity) are-
it’s wild to think that like.. all the raw materials to make like an iphone.. or a laptop.. or the internet.. have all existed for literally the entire history of humanity.. all the stuff.. has been here.. on earth.. and all the natural forces.. electricity… magnetism.. have all existed.. but.. we just didn’t know how to put it all together.. like… i wonder what miracles exist around us.. right now.. at this very moment.. that we can’t even imagine
